Regulars of true crime and/or horror content on the internet may be familiar with the story of the Therac-25. The medical disaster has been well-documented by the likes of Kyle Hill, Plainly Difficult, and Hackaday. I don't necessarily intend to cover new informational ground in this semi-blog of mine, but to create an association between mathematical frameworks in science to the horrific and deadly consequences they can lead to. The background of this block of text is a page of handwritten notes I took on the mathematics of linear accelerators, in particular the resonant cavities used to accelerate particles to the energies required for medical applications.
